Call to the G20: Don’t gamble with our food!

Reducing hunger in the world and strengthening small scale and family farming will require deep agricultural policy reforms – to radically challenge the liberalization of these policies, like the European Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Liberalisation of the agriculture sector has led to speculation, dumping of low cost products on developing countries, environmental damage and the deterioration of farmers’ livelihoods in the North and in the South.

As France is holding the G20presidency, we call on the president and the minister of agriculture to support sustainable and fair policies, and modes of production and consumption that allow States to secure their food sovereignty and the right to food of their population.

These policies must:
–> Support and protect environment friendly, small scale family farming in Europe and in the countries of the South
–> Take into account the specific needs of the many women farmers in Southern countries
–> Revive public mechanisms for storage, price stabilization and supply control at local and national levels that favour small scale family farming, guarantee a stable income for farmers and reasonable price for consumers
–> Address speculation on agricultural products
–> Stop land grabbing and support for biofuel
–> Strengthen, reform and democratize the United Nations – this must be the main decision-body for these regulations, which should be based on food sovereignty, cooperation and solidarity.
